Siamo stati tenuti a memorizzare mille cose.
Noi eravamo Soldati sporgenti, qualcosa di vedere;
ci siamo considerati fra i migliore;

In Englese:

THE TRUST TROOPER
There was once an Army Command called TRUST.
5000 U.S. Soldiers were stationed there.
Their mission: To support the AMG,
And with the British, this task, they did gladly share.

The Allied Military Government, by joint decree,
Would bring peace and order and tranquility,
To the Free Territory of Trieste,
In Northern Italy, on the Adriatic Sea.

Were the troops handpicked? We reckoned so!
For special, in many ways, were we.
We were “Ambassadors” in a foreign land;
Our conduct: Above reproach, it must always be.

We were required to memorize a thousand things.
The insignia of all the services, their colors too.
General orders, Chain of Command, and so much more,
And if you didn’t learn, there would be no pass for you.

Our field gear would not be just plain OD;
All items were dyed to a jet black hue,
Our shirts were pleated and were highly starched,
We wore shiny brass and silken scarves of blue.

Our bayonets glistened, our boots were dazzling bright,
And our clothing was tailored to fit just right.
Our trousers were bloused with elastic bands,
With chains inside to hold the creases tight.

2
Every bit of metal we wore was buffed or chromed.
Every buckle and eyelet had a sparkling gleam.
Our helmet liners were painted a glossy black,
We looked sharp, stood tall; We were the Colonel’s dream.

I loved Trieste then, and I still do.
It was called The Pearl of the Adriatic Sea.
It had pretty girls, friendly people, fantastic food.
It had the best tasting beer.... it was like Heaven to me.

And though we received no ribbon, no award, no badge,
We considered ourselves among the best;
And we’re still proud to bear the title of....
The Chrome Plated Troopers of Trieste.

Tens of thousands of American Soldiers served in TRUST but not one ever received any form of recognition forservice in that area. During the nine years of AMG Control, a number of Americans were killed and many werewounded in skirmishes with Yugoslav Border Patrols. However, no Purple Hearts were ever awarded, and noOccupation or Theater of Service Ribbons were ever authorized.TRUST seemed to be a forgotten command. There were no news stories, no headlines. Few people ever knew we
were there. Even the Army Historical Foundation in its voluminous and comprehensive publication “THE ARMY”,makes no mention of TRUST or Trieste.
This was my first Army assignment and I enjoyed the company of many dedicated American Soldiers.
We took great pride in serving as “Ambassadors in Uniform” to a place and people we will never forget.

CINQUANTA ANNI

Cinquanta anni sono venuti ed andati,
Ma sembra come soltanto ieri,
Che ci siamo inginocchiati e detto quella parola: “Si”„,
E mano in mano siamo andati a trovare il destino.

Cinquanta anni di Primavere, belle e verde;

Pensando a tutti gli anni meravigliosi che abbiamo avuti;

Gli anni hanno lasciato le sue marce, le sue segni;

IN INGLESE:

Fifty years have come and gone,
And yet it seems like only yesterday,
That we knelt and said those words: "I do",
Then joined hands and left to make our way.

Fifty years of Springtimes, lush and green;
Each year we would see the earth renew.
We saw Mother Nature's garden grow,
Just as our love did, strong and true.

For fifty years we felt the heat
Of that bright and glorious Summer Sun.
Our love was kindled to a burning flame,
And our two hearts merged and beat as one.

For fifty years we watched, in wonderment,
As Autumn leaves turned to gold and fell,
And with each early setting sun, we knew...
Our days would soon be getting short as well.

Fifty years of Winters, harsh and cold,
But we had our love to keep us warm.
We braved the freezing rain and biting snow,
Together, always, arm in arm.

Today we pause, reflect, and give our thanks,
For all the wondrous years we've had;
For the joy we felt when days were good,
For the strength to cope when they were bad.

Friends and family meet with us this day,
And all are welcome at our door.
They clasp our hands and wish us well,
As they have so many times before.
So swiftly have our seasons flown!
We hope and pray for a few years more.

Father Time has left his telltale mark,
And hair once full and dark has thinned to gray.
But thank God we're here to celebrate,
On this... Our Golden Wedding Day.

TORNARE INDIETRO L'OROLOGIO
Tornare indietro a quel momento speciale negli anni passati?
Cibo e bevande c’erano economici, abbiamo avuto bei tempi.
Abbiamo impostato l'esempio in abito e contegno.
Trieste in mille novecento e cinquanta.

Nel cuore di quella fanciulla;

THE SPANISH PEAKS
(A Native American Love Story)

Let me tell you a tale of a tragic love,
That I heard so long ago.
A Secret Love that could not long endure, For she was For she was Ute... and he was Navajo.

Legend tells of this forbidden love,
That burst into a burning flame,
In the heart of that fair maiden;
Wahatoya was her Indian name.

They met by chance, one Summer’s eve,
By a rippling mountain stream.
There they pledged their love, but lived in fear,
That it would never be but an empty dream.

Mistrust and hate between their tribes
Had lasted, lo! these many years,
So the Tribal Chiefs condemned their love,
Despite his pleas... despite her tears.

They kissed goodbye, he was called to war.
“I will return”, he said, “please wait for me”.
But with broken heart, she chose to die,
For she knew their love could never be.

The young Brave searched for her in vain.
In his heart he could hear her mournful cry.
He returned to where they had first known love,
And prayed: “Please bring her back or I too, shall die”.

Then the Gods looked down, and wisely said:
“She shall return... as mountains, bold and tall.
For such a wondrous love cannot just disappear.
She can now be loved... and revered by all”.

Today they’re called The Spanish Peaks,
And that is where the young maid lies.
Her form is outlined in the morning mist,
Her proud breast pointing toward the skies.
