BETFOR IN TOWN 2009

My first post to let you know that from 10 to 17 June there will be a group of almost 40, who were in TS between 1945 and 1954., serving either His or Her Majesty
I believe Larry Southgate has already alerted you to the fact. Most of the group are at the Hotel Italia, which is hosting us again for the 4th time.
(2004, 2006 2008 and this year 2009)
Some of the group know that Tuesday, 16th is BLOOM'S DAY and there will be a photo call at the statue at 1030hrs that day.
I am sure that no further explanation is needed.Anyone Irish will tell you
Already in town is our very own Triestine, Elena (Nives) Young who will hopefully have sorted out some eating and drinking venues for us.

Hey, now, don't involve me in this highbrow brouhaha. Sure, I have read Ulysses. I had to read something to pass the time when I was an Export Sales Manager in the Middle East. I may even have a paper-back copy somewhere in the house. But it's like 'La Divina Commedia' di Dante (a copy of which I have plus a copy of 'Il Decamerone' both in Italian) or the works of that other bloke called Shakespeare. I have never read anything of his works. You read it and forget it. I've even got a copy of the 'Tropic of Cancer' in my bedside cabinet. But don't ask me anything about it! I'm no pseudo 'intelletuale'. I do not go to art galleries, Art (you know, pictures, etc) leaves me cold. I do not go to museums. If it's dead leave it lie. And what on earth is 'BLOOMS DAY'. Never heard of it until I read it here. Sorry, Lilliana, but although I have read the above post, no thank you, not for me. I can't help on this occasion. I have been to the Vatican and did a tour of the Vatican City in 1946. I've been to Florence quite a few times but never into any of the museums or art galleries there. I have climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I have been almost to the top of Mont Etna, and have driven as far as one is allowed up on Vesuvio. I have seen the al-fresco painting of the Last Supper in that church in Milan and the Coloseum in Rome. But my best memories are something like the time I had a lovely bowl of cabbage soup in one of the poorest parts of Napoli at the invite of a scugnizzo, and the time I had a lunch of skinko di maiale in una trattoria in Genova. I have been all round Urbino. I have been to the Opera al-aperto in Verona to see Aida, and to see Madama Butterfly al-aperto in San Giusto. But please, someone, tell me what Blooms Day is all about. No more troubles to connect to the forum?

Bloom is the family name of the protagonist of Ulysses. All the story lasts only one day: the 16th June and Bloom's Day is celebrated on 16th June in Dublin, Triest and somewhere else.

sorry Larry, but atrieste don't have certificates at all ... it must be something related to the connectivity problems we have had those last two days

really I don't have any clue about what those problems come from but I hope they have been solved where they was starting from

I agree entirely with Larry about Ulysses, I have read 3/4 of the book and it took a lot of perseverance to do it, apart from few sparkling phrases I found a lot of non sense in the whole work. I know that the author is dear to you because some of the work was written while the author was in Trieste and you have even honoured him with a bronze but to me it means Nix. Coce Ciao

I haven't read Ulysses and I just answered to Royski. But a picture of BETFOR group near James Joyce statue would be very nice.
I'll try to be there at 10.30.

Thanks for the information Ron. For a minute there I thought you were the one on the left having just climbed out of the canal being held by an old friend from the other forum, the Canadian Ursus.
If there's any chance of Larry being in a PR photoshoot no doubt he will be there.
But why should we be celebrating anything by Joyce? Wasn't he Irish?
Yes, I'm a racist!!! And, as Coce says, Ulysesse is so bad nothing really stays in ones mind. But I thought he wrote the story Lady somethings or other lover? Oh yes, Chatterley. One part of that remains in one's mind. "and this where tha................. and this is where tha.............

The two (both with white caps) flanking J.J. are the two most senior members of BETFOR ASSOCIATION. After the picture we went by Pullman LAZZARETTO as guests of the Colonello. A very memorable Blooms Day. That is Larry on JJ's LEFT.
