1905
Haydn Quartet : Grandfather's Clock

My grandfather's clock
Was too large for the shelf,
So it stood ninety years on the floor;
It was taller by half
Than the old man himself,
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more.
It was bought on the morn
Of the day that he was born,
And was always his treasure and pride;
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

CHORUS:
Ninety years without slumbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
His life seconds numbering,
Tick, tock, tick, tock,
It stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.

It rang an alarm
In the dead of the night,
An alarm that for years had been dumb;
And we knew that his spirit
Was pluming for flight,
That his hour of departure had come.
Still the clock kept the time,
With a soft and muffled chime,
As we silently stood by his side.
But it stopped short
Never to go again,
When the old man died.
CHORUS

1914
American Quartet : It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary
Qua dovemo saltar diretamente al 1914. Come podè imaginar no xe facile trovar breni de l'epoca, e sopratuto ascoltabili.
El 1914 xe in piena prima guera mondial e "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" xe una famosa canzon proprio del periodo de guera.

Up to mighty London
Came an Irishman one day
As the streets are paved with gold
Sure, everyone was gay
Singing songs of Piccadilly,
Strand and Leicester Square
Till Paddy got excited
And he shouted to them there...

CHORUS:
It's a long way to Tipperary,
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know!
Goodbye Piccadilly,
Farewell Leicester Square!
It's a long, long way to Tipperary,
But my heart's right there.

Paddy wrote a letter
To his Irish Molly-O,
Saying, "Should you not receive it
Write and let me know!"
"If I make mistakes in spelling,
Molly dear," said he,
"Remember, it's the pen that's bad,
Don't lay the blame on me!

CHORUS:
It's a long way to Tipperary...

Enrico Caruso : O sole mio

Pe' ll'aria fresca pare gia' na festa...
Che bella cosa na jurnata 'e sole.

Ma n'atu sole
cchiu' bello, oi ne'.
'o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
‘o sole, ‘o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
sta 'nfronte a te!

Lùcene 'e llastre d'a fenesta toia;
'na lavannara canta e se ne vanta
e pe' tramente torce, spanne e canta
lùcene 'e llastre d'a fenesta toia.

Ma n'atu sole
cchiu' bello, oi ne'.
'o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
‘o sole, ‘o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
sta 'nfronte a te!

Quanno fa notte e 'o sole
se ne scenne,
me vene quase 'na malincunia;
sotto 'a fenesta toia restarria
quanno fa notte e 'o sole
se ne scenne.

Ma n'atu sole
cchiu' bello, oi ne'.
'o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
‘o sole, ‘o sole mio
sta 'nfronte a te!
sta 'nfronte a te!

Enrico Caruso : Santa Lucia
Altra spendida canzon e altretanto splendida interpretazion de Caruso.

L'astro d'argento
Placida è l'onda
Prospero il vento;
Venite all'agile
Barchetta mia;
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

Con questo zeffiro
Così soave,
Oh, come è bello
Star sulla nave.
Su passeggeri,
Venite via;
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

In' fra le tende
Bandir la cena,
In una sera
Così serena.

Chi non dimanda,
Chi non desia;
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

Mare sì placido,
vento sì caro,
Scordar fa i triboli
Al marinaio.
E va gridando
Con allegria:
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

O dolce Napoli,
O suol beato,
Ove sorridere
Volle il creato,
Tu sei l'impero
Dell'armonia,
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

Or che tardate?
Bella è la sera;
Spira un'auretta
Fresca e leggiera;
Venite all'agile
Barchetta mia;
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

1920
Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Whispering

Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Three O'Clock in the Morning

It's three o'clock in the morning,
We've danced the whole night thru,
And daylight soon will be dawning,
Just one more waits with you,
That melody so entrancing,
Seems to be made for us two,
I could just keep right on dancing
forever dear with you.

There goes the three o'clock chime,
chiming rhyming
My heart keeps beating in time,
Sounds like an old sweet love tune,
Say that there soon will be a honeymoon.

It's three o'clock in the morning,
We've danced the whole night thru,
And daylight soon will be dawning,
Just one more waltz with you,
That melody so entrancing,
Seems to be made for us two,
I could just keep right on dancing
forever dear with you.

1905
Haydn Quartet : Grandfather's Clock
1914
American Quartet : It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary
1916
Enrico Caruso : O sole mio
Enrico Caruso : Santa Lucia
1920
Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Whispering
1922
Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Three O'Clock in the Morning
Benson Orchestra of Chicago : Toot Toot Tootsie! (Goo-Bye!)

Qualche altra curiosità su de lori trata dal libro "The Oxford Companion to Popular Music" de Peter Gammond e da altre fonti (lavoro de chebe! ):

Henry Clay Work, autore di Grandfather's Clock
Nato a Middletown, Conn.

Famoso in tutto el mondo, come Pavarotti. A New York vien considerado el più grande tenore de tuti i tempi. Xe grande interprete anche dele canzoni napoletane come, oltre a quelle citade qua, "Torna a Surriento", "J' te vurria vasà", "Core 'ngrato", "Comme facette mammeta" e "A vucchella", scritta da Gabriele d'Annunzio.

http://www.teatrotrianon.it/it/mediatec ... rafia1.asp (7 pagine)

http://www.ristorantemuseocaruso.com/biocenter.htm

Whispering

El appari nei film "The King of Jazz" (1930), Thanks a Million (1935), Strike Up the Band (1940), Lady, Let's Dance (1944), Atlantic City (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), The Fabulous Dorseys (1947). El ga anche scrito almeno tre libri: "Jazz" (1926), "How to Be a Bandleader" (1941) e "Records for the Millions" (1948).

Toot Toot Tootsie, Goodbye
That's My Baby", oltre a numerosi altri sucesi.

E adeso rivemo finalmente al... CHARLESTON!!

1924
Arthur Gibbs & His Gang : Charleston
De Arthur Gibbs & His Gang no se trova molto.

Charleston! Charleston!
Made in Carolina.
Some dance, some prance,
I'll say.
There's nothing finer than the Charleston,
Charleston.
Lord, how you can shuffle.
Ev'ry step you do leads to something new,
Man, I'm telling you it's a lapazoo.
Buck dance wing dance
Will be a back number,
But the Charleston,
The new Charleston,
That dance is surely a comer.
Sometime you'll dance it one time,
The dance called the Charleston,
Made in South Caroline.

Eco le parole de questa version:

Who's that coming down the street?
Who's that looking so petite?
Who's that coming down to meet me here?
Who's that you know who I mean,
Sweetest "who" you've ever seen,
I could tell her miles away from here.

Yes, Sir, That's my Baby, No, Sir, Don't mean "Maybe"
Yes, Sir, That's my Baby now.
Yes ma'am, we've decided, No ma'am, we won't hide it,
Yes, ma'am, you're invited now.
By the way, By the way,
When we reach the preacher I'll say,
Yes Sir, That's my Baby, No, Sir, don't mean "maybe",
Yes Sir, That's my Baby now.

Who's the "who" I rave about?
Who do I feel blue without?
In the Winter, Summer, Spring and Fall?
What was I just "gonna" say,
I forget, but anyway,
Here's the most important thing of all.

Ma forsi voi la conosevi in italian?

Lola mia, vien via con me
c'è il fox-trot che fa per te
che hai la frenesia di ballar.
E'un fox-trot rivoluzion
che si chiama charleston
l'avrai ben sentito nominar.

Lola, cosa impari a scuola?
Manco una parola,
balli il charleston.
Lola, balza il cuore in gola
rompe qualche suola
ma quante emozion!

Charleston, charleston
che delizia, che passione!
Lola, sai non è una fola
dopo la spagnola
viene il charleston.

Charleston, charleston
che delizia, che passione!
Lola, sai non è una fola
dopo la spagnola
viene il charleston
viene il charleston
viene il charleston.

Charleston, charleston

Still I feel the thrill of your charms!

'Tender eyes that shine
They will light my way tonight
I'll see you in my dreams!

Xe anche l'epoca dei musical e infati la xe trata da "No, No, Nanette" e i autori xe Vincent Youmans (1898-1946) su parole de Irving Caesar (1895-1996).

Queste le parole:

I'm discontented with homes that I've rented
So I have invented my own.
Darling, this place is lovely oasis
Where life's weary taste is unknown
Far from the crowded city
Where flowers pretty caress the stream
Cozy to hide in, to live side by side in,
Don't let it apart in my dream-

Picture you upon my knee
Just tea for two
And two for tea
Just me for you
And you for me alone
Nobody near us to see us or hear us
No friends or relations
On weekend vacations
We won't have it known, dear,
That we own a telephone, dear...

Day will break and I'll wake
And start to bake a sugar cake
For you to take for all the boys to see

We'll raise a family

A boy for you
And a girl for me

Can't you see how happy we would be...

Ted Lewis & His Band : O! Katharina
Double version of The Sensational Success from "Chauve Souris." Specially featured by Elsie Parkes in Hugh J. Ward's Stupendous Christmas Pantomime Cinderella. Produced by Frank Neil. Musical Director A. T. Burton. [The verse tells how Heinie came to Yankee Land from Rotterdam, went to the follies, then returned home to Katharina, lamenting how to keep his love she must be leaner, "There's so much of you, two could love you. Learn to swim, join a gym, eat farina. Unless you're leaner I'll have to build a big arena, you're such a crowd, my Katharine, I got a lot when I got you." In the second verse she becomes leaner and so wows him that in the chorus all he can say is "O Katharina" over and over again.]
No son rivado a trovar le parole.

Me son preso una picola pausa, anche perché sto lavoro me par interesante (almeno spero) ma xe anche lungheto.
Semo cusì rivadi al 1926, ancora l'epoca dela grandi orchestre (che durerà parechi anni)....

1926
Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Valencia
Jan Garber & Orchestra : Baby Face
George Olsen & His Orchestra : Horses

e in dettaglio :

Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Valencia

Jan Garber & Orchestra : Baby Face

Rosy cheeks and turn'd up nose and curly hair,
I'm raving 'bout my baby now,
Pretty little dimples here and dimples there;
Don't want to live without her,
I lover her goodness knows,
I wrote a song about her and here's the way it goes:

Chorus:
Baby face, you've got the cutest little baby face
There's not another one could take your place
Baby face, my poor heart is jumpin;
You sure have started somethin'
Baby face, I'm up in heaven
When I'm in your fond embrace,
I didn't need a shove
'Cause I just fell in love
With your pretty baby face.

When you were a baby not so long ago,
You must have been the cutest thing.
I can picture you at ev'ry baby show
Just winnin' ev'ry ribbon with your sweet baby way.
Say, hones I ain't fibbin', you'd win 'em all today.

Chorus:

George Olsen & His Orchestra : Horses
No podevo no meter questo brano dedicado ai cavai! :-D

Day is ending, birds are wending
Back to the shelter of
Each little nest they love

Nightshades falling, lovers calling
What makes the World go round
Nothing but love

When whippoorwills call
And evening is nigh
I hurry to my Blue Heaven

I turn to the right
A little white light
Will lead you to my Blue Heaven

A a smiling face, a fireplace, a cosy room
A little nest that nestles where roses bloom

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We're happy in my Blue Heaven

(Orchestral Break)

A a smiling face, a fireplace, a cosy room
A little nest that nestles where roses bloom

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We're happy in my Blue Heaven

(Whistling)

A a smiling face, a fireplace, a cosy room
A little nest that nestles where roses bloom

Just Molly and me
And baby makes three
We hurry to my Blue Heaven

Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians : Charmaine
Famoso valzer, scrito nel 1926 e publicado nel 1927, dale numerose versioni. Autori Erno Rapee (musica) e Lew Pollack (parole).

Versione maschile:

I can't forget the night we met
How bright were stars above
That precious memory lingers yet
When you declared your love

And then you went away
And now each night and day...

I wonder why you keep me waiting
Charmaine, my Charmaine
I wonder when bluebirds are mating
Will you come back again

I wonder if I keep on praying
Will our dreams be the same
I wonder if you ever think of me too
I'm waiting my Charmaine for you

Versione femminile:

You went away one dreary day
I knew you had to go
'Mid tears and cheers I heard you say
"Charmaine, I love you so"

Though old years turn to new
My heart keeps calling you...

I wonder why you keep me waiting
Charmaine cries in vain
I wonder when bluebirds are mating
Will you come back again

I wonder if I keep on praying
Will our dreams by the same
I wonder if you ever think of me too
Charmaine's waiting, just for you

Ve dago solo i link e le parole. I autori xe Milton Ager e Jack Yellen.

Le parole:

Ain't she sweet?
See her walking down that street.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?

Ain't she nice?
Look her over once or twice.
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she nice?

Just cast an eye in her direction.
Oh me oh my, ain't that perfection?

Oh I repeat,
Well, don't you think that's kinda neat?
Yes I ask you very confidentially,
Ain't she sweet?

Henry Burr : Are You Lonesome To-Night?
E inveze no!
Autori Lou Handman (musica) e Roy Turk (parole).

Le parole:

Are you lonesome tonight
Do you miss me tonight
Are you sorry we drifted apart

Does your memory stray
To a bright summer day
When I kissed you
And called you sweetheart

Do the chairs in your parlor
Seem empty and bare
Do you gaze at your doorstep
And picture me there

Is your heart filled with pain
Shall I come back again
Tell me dear
Are you lonesome tonight

{Interlude}

Do the chairs in your parlor
Seem empty and bare
Do you gaze at your doorstep
And picture me there

Is your heart filled with pain
Shall I come back again
Tell me dear
Are you lonesome tonight

Aura Lee
(Words: George R. Poulton; Music W. W. Fosdick)

As the blackbird in the spring, 'neath the willow tree,
Sat and piped, I heard him sing; sing of Aura Lee.
Aura Lee, Aura Lee, maid with golden hair
Sunshine came along with thee, and swallows in the air.

In thy blush the rose was born, music when you spake.
Through thine azure eye, the morn, sparkling seemed to break.
Aura Lee, Aura Lee, birds of crimson wing
Never song have sung to me as in that night, sweet spring.

Aura Lee, the bird may flee the willow's golden hair
Swing through winter fitfully, on the stormy air.
Yet if thy blue eyes I see, gloom will soon depart.
For to me, sweet Aura Lee is sunshine through the heart.

When the mistletoe was green, midst the winter's snows
Sunshine in thy face was seen kissing lips of rose.
Aura Lee, Aura Lee, take my golden ring.
Love and light return with thee, and swallows with the spring.

Note: A traditional West Point favorite for a couple of centuries. Elvis,
of course, used the tune for "Love me Tender." Neither set of lyrics
is terribly inspired; perhaps the ruder fusion approach is best:
"Love me tender, love me sweet, love me Aura Lee
" RG
