In the 60s (June 2nd 1964) we opened that was until 1992 the finest and longest cavity of Trieste Karst (now it is at the third place): the Fessura del Vento (Fissure of Wind), and it was the only one, except for Trebiciano Abyss, having a river inside it. First of all I want to remember the talent of the discoverer, Franco Florit, who discovered also the second deep pit of the Samatorza Abyss (explored in this new part for the first time on December 13th 1964).

In those days we were member of Trieste Speleological Group (GST). But during the summer of the same year the most part of us (included Florit and me) passed to Geo-Speleological Section of Sciences Adriatic Society (SAS), with President Walter Maucci, with which society they stayed in the successive years.

The Fissure of Wind has been entire created by an underground river that flows sideways at Rosandra Valley (on the right slope, under Saint Lorenzo). Then this river-bed was left for another lower, therefore the cavity runs for beyond 2.6 km on two levels, and the lower has a river, that sometimes can be also travelled with a rubber boat.

The cavity, previously, was known for a length of... 5 meters! But from its entrance was just blowing "a strong wind" surely not justifiable by a so short development (the air movement is given from the difference of temperature between the inside and the outside of the cave). The digging went on a long time and in fact the initial drift, very tight, had a length at least of 50 meters (travelled the first times by lean persons, as me, with much hard work, beyond that, in the reascent, with the aid of other people who outside was pulling a rope.

The year of the discovery and the year after we made many prospectings in that zone trying to find other caves of a sure interest, but unfortunately without result.

It was narrated of a possible cavity on the scree at the left side of the cascade, from which some water would be exited with violence in the big rains periods. And of another found during the jobs of the railroad construction, that it would have been covered with large concrete (or stone) slabs and that it would have been found under a gallery of the same railroad. But executed diggings had not given the desired result and they were interrupted. Personally I had found one small cavity on the the right slope of the valley, not so far from the Wind Fissure, where I found some fossil rests (I had not pushed myself more ahead even if the same could have continued).

Strong was also the searches for the famous "Abyss III of Gropada" about which there are strange tales in the history of Trieste speleology. Other diggings had been carried out to Gropada, at Grotta della Cisterna (Reservoir Cave), obstructed with stones by the peasants, but the unobstruction job had been revealed very hard and after a little it had been abandoned. Other attempts had been made at Grotta del Tombino (Manhole Cover Cave) - Pozzo del Monte Franco (Franco Mountain Pit) - and in some other Karst places.

On the message above you can find the first relief of the Fissure of Wind, carried out between 1964 and 1965 (designed by Rino Semeraro). Click over the design, and you'll see one magnified version and then one still bigger. At the end you'll go back to this page.

The description of the photo above:
"Passage on a pit (point 13 or 14). The first times this passage was crossed without ropes and the first people in absolute to cross it has been Ombretta, a nice and intrepid girl. The photo dates back to the times of the first explorations with Geo-Speleological Section of Sciences Adriatic Society (1964-1965)."
