L'Autore divide il libro in due parti. La prima parte é dedicata alla storia della cittá. La seconda, assai piú interessante, é una rassegna dei personaggi famosi che hanno vissuto a Trieste. Notevole e utile é certamente la Bibliografia.

É una mia ipotesi che Jan Morris abbia utilizzado questo libro, per le referenze storiche, nello scrivere Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere. Non é infatti una concidenza che ambi Autori scrivano per la stessa Casa Editrice...

Holy mackerel. You believe there's life on another planet? "We're going to discover there are sentient beings in the galaxy. When it happens, the psychological effects will be phenomenal. We'll have to start again. Forget Libya. Forget Cameron. This is really big stuff. And it's going to happen, not in my lifetime, but in yours."

Can she be serious?

"Of course, if you articulate this view, as I've discovered," she said equably, "you're called a Millennialist. 'Oh,' they say. 'She's bonkers, she's gone off her head.' But I haven't. I believe in the sentient beings. But who they are, or where they are, that's not my business."

Oh come now. If ever a global civilisation needed a representative to talk to an alien race about its urban triumphs, and about the need for kindness at a cosmic, intergalactic level, it's Jan Morris.

Da triestina adottiva, il suo libro su Trieste mi ha aiutato molto a mettere in prospettiva quel poco che conoscevo della storia della vostra / nostra bellissima città.
I libri di John Gibbins (che narra le vicende dell'Impero Austro-Ungarico in chiave semi-comiche ma ricca di dettagli storici) sono altrettanto interessanti (però li ho trovati solo in inglese).

ne avevo letto il primo, adesso ho trovato il terzo ed il quarto. Mi sto divertendo col terzo, poi vi racconto.
