Help With Postcard.
Hi All
My name is Aldo. I live in wales. My father is a Triestine, now retired and living in trieste (Piazza Voluntari Giuliani). I have been to trieste several times, expecially when I was a child, and love the city.
I have a lage collection of postcards of the city, and i'm hoping to put together a website, in english, using these cards and street maps from 1836 to the present day. Myabe even to rival the misterkappa site, thaou=h that is a lofty aim! My research is hampered by the fact I do not speak italian!
In the Italian language section of this forum there are some fantastic threads which appear to be able to help me associate different street names with maps from different times.
Are there any multilinguists out there who can help me with tranlations of small amounts of text from forum posts, posted in italian?
I have some good books, but they are in italian! Is there a comprehensive and detailed book on tirieste in English?
Here is the first. What is the building / street?

Help with Set of cards- 'Associazione Italiana Maestri...'
Hi All
I have dozens and dozens of sets of cards issues by 'Associazione Italiana Maestri Cattolici'. Each covers a street in Trieste, building by building, with historical information on the back.
Can anyone tell me who, what and why about these cards.
I've scanned one cover below.
Thank you
Aldo

Hi Aldo, nice to have you here with us.
The building is Palazzo Vianello and you can find here some pictures of how it looks today.
The main street in the picture is Via Carducci, also known as Via del Torrente in the XIX century.
If you need some translations, pls. let us know and we're gonna do our best to help you.
Just forgive me for joining together your 3 messages: they're talking about the same subject so is better for us to keep them in just one topic.

I would guess that your postcard is from the early 30s or late 20s. In fact, the RAS building wasn't there yet. It is now located on the left of your postcard as part of the Piazza Oberdan group of buildings.
Regarding books on Trieste, why don't you start with Trieste and the meaning of nowhere, written by the great Welsh author Jan Morris

Re: Help with Set of cards- 'Associazione Italiana Maestri..
Those postcards were issued in the years between Fiftie's and Seventie's , depending on the series, and were distributed in the schools. I have some of them, a lot of others are owned by a friend of mine, a retired schoolteacher , who kindly allowed me to copy them. But the Parco della Rimembranza is not in my collection. Some of them are still available in the second hand bookshops at Trieste.trieste1 ha scritto:Hi All

Ive read it! First book I found, and it gave me a good insight into the Triestine.

The top one is Strada del Friuli, a road that link Trieste to Prosecco. It should be just after the Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria), with the view of Barcola.
The bottom one is the Tritone Fountain in Piazza della Borsa.
The only other English book I know is Travellers to Trieste but I believe is out of print. Try your local library...

Postcards of Trieste
Hi Aldo
Before I forget, have you looked at : http://www.milhist.net/betfor/gallery05/
This is the BETFOR site and has many lovely old postcards of Trieste.
Looking back at your reply to my posting it appears that I may have confused you
Don't worry about it, I seem to go through life confusing people
My main and only interest in postcards of Trieste was due to the fact that in my Army Album I have a few of the postcards collected when I was stationed in Villa Opicina in the 1945/1947 period.
You have certainly arrived at the right website to answer any queries that you may have about old Trieste.
Enjoy !
Best wishes
Ron

it's Piazza della Borsa, an old image with the fountain of the Neptune which is now in Piazza venezia. One can see the arch of La Portizza, at left Benque Fotografia Benque
