fonte: Qualifikationsliste – Kriegsarchiv, Wien (KAW)
1875 - nasce a cormons (LA-AU)
I’m trying to fill in details about my gandfather (my mother’s father) history during WWI. My questions concern in particular his return home after WWI was ended.
He was born in 1875 in Cormons, a small town in the region that at the time was part of Austria-Hungary and was called Adriatisches Kuestenland.
I make a summary of data concerning his military service obtained from his Qualifikationsliste – Kriegsarchiv, Wien.
1896
he enters active service in the regular army (Landwher) as Einjaehrig Freiwilliger (1 year long voluntary service) – he attends officer school (Verpflegsaspiranten u. E.F. Schule in Wien – he was enologist)
– he becomes Verpflegungsakzessist in Klagenfurt garrison (I think this is the first rank for a commissioned officer, perhaps similar to the italian sottotenente)
from 1899 to 1908
he serves for a 3-week period every two years in Klagenfurt and Marburg-Maribor (I think this was standard practice in the A-H army)
1908
“uebersetzt in das Verhaeltnis der Evidenz der Landwehr” (I think this means he is moved to the reserve)
1914
he is called for war on 27.07.1914 and assigned to the Verpflegungs Magazin in Graz, then in Goerz, then in Marburg-Maribor
here is his photo taken in august 1914
maggio 1915 - viene promosso Landwehr Verpfl. Offiz. i.d. Evidenz d. Landw. – Magazineur sempre a Marburg
ecco una foto di quel periodo
1915, May
he becomes Magazineur - Landwehr Verpfl. Offiz. i.d. Evidenz d. Landw. in Marburg. Here is a photo taken around that time.
01.05.1915
wird er „befoerdert zum Landwehr Verpfl. Offiz.“
There are no documents in his army file in Wien after September 1916.
29.12.1916
he posts his photo to his wife (my grandmother) at the time living in Marburg or possibly in Graz.
The photo is dated from Bereczk (Siebenbuergen-Transylvania) - today Bretcu in Romania – in the Carpatian mountains, not far from Ojtuz Pass where around that time Germans and Austro-Hungarians fought Rumanians.
here is the photo,” taken (he writes) in the courtyard where I live”.
?Zug?
Later information I foud about him comes from the State Archive in Trieste. It consists in a “Landsturmevidenzblatt“ dated 1919 (?!) issued by the „Landwehrterritorialkommando der Dienstbestimmung in Graz“.
At the foot of the page there is a pencilled note which I cannot quite read because it is written by hand in Gothic alphabet. Could it be U. It. ?Zug?
Bleistiftnote, vielleicht U. It.
The latest date I have is 13.04.1920 and it is stamped on an Italian passaporto per l’interno (passport for the interior). From what I know about my grandfahter’s biography, it should refer to some trip he might have taken from Cormons to (I think) Graz and not to his return home from WWI.

This is quite an obscure and difficult period. Official military documents (at least in my grandfather’s case) did not reach Wien from his last assignment (which I suppose to be in Transylvania). From what I know, a sort of subdued „war“ went on for some time after the end of 1918 between such Austra-Hungary „Nachfolgestaaten“ (as for instance Hungary) and Romania or SHS in various forms.
That is exactly the period I am trying to know a little better. For what I understand, UK soldiers guarded Tarvis Pass (on my grandfather‘s pass, ENTRY is written in pencil beside the stamp), italian soldiers guarded the Brenner Pass and A-U frontiers to the East were still uncertain and/or fought about.
Unfortunately my grandfather died in 1935 before I was born and my grandmother seems not to have liked to tell much about the war…
If somebody can help me in my search about the years 1917-1922 in „Mitteleuropa“, and particularly with reference to what happened to A-U citizens in the last years of the war and immediately after, I will be very grateful .
I have two more questions to ask:
1 - does anybody recognize the fine liberty building on the back of this photo taken possibly around the end of 1915or the beginning of 1916?
My great-grandfather, great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and her brother are among the people (my mother is the little child with a doll in the foreground). The place should be Marburg-Maribor or Graz. I think it could be Marburg: from enlargements I have obtain the scenery pictures on the wall under the porch are river-scenes (or maybe lakeshore scenes). Could it be the Drau River? or maybe the Mur?
Graz?
2 – does anybody remeber the queer little monument the children are standing near? They are my mother and her two brothers around the end of 1916. The place should still be Marburg or Graz.
Please excuse mistakes in my English (I’m out of exercise) and in my history knowledge (I’m trying to fill in blanks).
Thank you in advance for any possible help and byby.
