Justo per informarve, el salvataggio dei due minatori in Tasmania sta continuando lentamente ma con sicureza . La situazion xe delicata perche' el pericolo che qualsiasi vibrazion possi causar una frana nela zona de operazioni xe assai vicin. I socoritori se trova a 12 metri dai minatori, i ga dovesto getar una base de cemento per imbulonar una machina speciale, una spece de trapano per rocia che la ga' la capacita' de forar un'apertura de 1 metro de diametro, i ga sa' trapanado un foro de 20cm. in diametro fino ai minadori, el progreso xe assai lento, durante la note scorsa i ca' trapana' el piu' grande diametro per una profondita' de 2 metri. Speremo che tuto vadi ben, e che i sia liberi nele prossime 24 ore. Ciao Coce

Trapped miners 'helping own rescue'

Tasmania's two trapped miners are being kept busy helping with their own rescue as the final hours of their ordeal tick away.

The pair, Todd Russell, 34, and Brant Webb, 37, spent several hours grouting rock crevices they could reach from their cramped cage almost a kilometre underground to minimise the risk of rock being disturbed when their rescuers finally break through.

Hopes are high the men will be freed on Sunday, as the high-tech raise borer drilling machine finished its part cutting the one-metre-wide rescue tunnel through the rock about 3pm (AEST) Saturday.

The machine was stopped about 1.5 metres short of the men, and the tunnel was shored up and lights and air vents added in preparation for the delicate task of hand cutting through the final rock separating the men from freedom.

It will be their 12th night spent entombed deep in the Beaconsfield gold mine.

AWU national secretary Bill Shorten said the final cutting job would require "old fashioned muscle" as the rock was five times as hard as concrete.

The men also have been kept busy packing for their freedom.

They have been issued with bags which they have hung on the steel cage in which they are trapped, filling them with items they want to keep after they are freed.

Paramedics who have been deep in the mine talking to the men said iPods with their favourite music were among those items.

To allow the last part of the operation rescuers have modified a range of equipment including a diamond-tipped chainsaw, pneumatic jacks, picks and other hand tools for use in the tunnel's confined space.

Working in the small space to reach the trapped men would be a huge task, Tasmania Minerals Council chief executive Terry Long said.

"As you can appreciate they will be working in a space only a metre wide and that will restrict the number of people," Mr Long said.

"It's delicate, it's painstaking and it's absolutely critically important of course that it's carried out correctly."

"I suspect that caution and safety are the overriding factors. In mining terms it is an amazing process, it is unprecedented."

Mine manager Matthew Gill said teams of miners would work short shifts, mainly on their knees, to first extend the tunnel and then dig upwards towards the pair.

Mr Russell and Mr Webb became trapped in the mine during a rock fall caused by seismic activity on the evening of April 25, Anzac Day.

They were discovered alive last Sunday night.

A slab of rock landed on the cage roof, protecting them from other rock falling around them. Their workmate, Larry Knight, 44, was not in the cage and died in the disaster.

On Friday night, Mr Russell jokingly asked ambulance paramedics to stop off at a fast food drive-through when he is freed and on his way to hospital.

Paramedic Peter James, who was in the mine talking to the men, said Mr Russell was yearning for McDonald's takeaway.

"Todd wants steak, egg and chips and he wants to go to Maccas," Mr James said. "... he asked for us to go through a drive-through with the lights and sirens going."

In the meantime, the men are eating five meals a day including a choice of fish, red or white meats and sandwiches.

Paramedic Ian Hart said they ate an omelette on Friday night.

"It was still nice and warm when it went into the guys. They really appreciated it," he said.

Mr Hart said the men remained keen to walk unassisted from the mine.

"They are very keen to walk out," he said. "Obviously that can only take place on positive advice from the doctors once they are examined."

Mr James said the two miners were inspiring.

"You are honoured to be dealing with guys like this ... they are amazing," he said.

Ora, copiero quel articolo dal zornal che appare lasopra, e la inviero anche quel ai nosetri zornai - e per di piu - anche alla BBC. Ma i nostri zornai xe stai troppi occupai con la novella di il Ns. Vice Prime Minister e la sua amante. Pagine e pagine di fotografie ma neanche un di lui a letto con sta donna. Ma pare che ella lo serviva anche come quella donne ga servi il Presidente dagli Stati Uniti. Ti vol che la tragedia di tre minatori intrappolati in un posto cussi tanto lontan da noi abbia priorita su una storia cussi romantica????????????????

Soltanto per l'esattezza, Larry. La storia riportata, non proviene da un giornale, ma dal sito Internet ninemsn, che e` il sito della stazione televisiva, Channel Nine.

Non credere che le televisioni inglesi siani le sole a mettere storie di poco valore umano per prime nei telegiornali.

Qua, in Australia, spesso mettono prima di tutto le notizie sportive, specialmente se e` accaduto qualcosa di straordinario, come, per esempio, quando l'Inghilterra batte` l'Australia in cricket, oppure se un grosso nome nel calcio australiano si fa male.

Tante volte, ascoltando il notiziario, mi moglie ed io ci guardiamo, e pensiamo: Guarda la, la fine del mondo puo` essere scoppiata, ma ancora non lo sappiamo.

Ritornando per un momento alla tragedia della miniera a Beaconsfield, gli aiuti sono arrivati ad un metro e mezzo dai minatori intrappolati, ma hanno trovato roccia molto piu` dura del previsto.

L'odissea continua.

Un'altra tragedia su questo sito xe la morte per infarto de uno dei piu' famosi reporters in Austalia, "Richard Carleton". In veritá anca i giornai inglesi i sta seguendo sta tragedia. El sito dela BBC lo gaveva nela prima pagina...

Xe assai curioso come questo tipo de storie suscita un grandisimo interese nela gente. Me ricordo de una vecia storia de un minator american dei anni 50 che i zercava senza suceso, purtropo, de liberar. I gaveva adiritura fato una canzon e anca un film su de lui...
Lo stesso con quel povero muleto che iera cascado in un buso e che adiritura Pertini, che iera Presidente in quei tempi, el iera andado sul posto.

Comunque par che sti muli australiani i li va a salvar...Speremo ben. I disi che i giornai australiani i se sta fazendo la concorenza a chi che poderá gaver la esclusiva de intervistarli. Povereti muli, magari i poderá ciapar dei bei soldini!!!!

Finalmente, stamane in TV 'Telegiornale BBC 1, jera per la prima volta 25 secondi di notizia su questa tragedia. Cussi non ho dovuto inviare una copia come detto lasora. Ma mia figlia mi diceva che la seguiva ogni mattina su un altro canale della BBC (BBC 24 ore) di notizie internazionali. E anche oggi, jerano 4 righe nel zornal 'News of the World' zornal sorellata con 'The Sun' al quale avevo inviato la prima notizia dal questo Forum il 4 maggio.
Cussi, ze almeno una famiglia in GB (aparte quel del Macondo) che sta in ansia per la sorte di quei do minadori. Perche gavevimo anche noi un fradel che lavorava zo nelle minieri di Sud Galles che dopo ze morto del cancro.

After 320 hours trapped 925m underground, two men are free

It is the news a small Tasmanian town, and the nation, has been waiting to hear since Anzac Day: trapped Beaconsfield miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb are free.

At 5.58am, the two men walked out of mine lift on to solid ground unaided, as they had requested. They hung their tags back on the mine out board and embraced their families to the cheers of Beaconsfield.

Rescue crews cleared the last vertical section of the men's 16m escape tunnel a short time ago and reached the collapsed shaft where men had been pinned in a small cage for 14 nights.

"Today we've had unbelievable news. After 14 nights at 4.47am, Brant Webb and 4.54am Todd Russell, were freed," Australian Workers Union national secretary Bill Shorten said.

Mine manager Matthew Gill said both Brant — who came out of the tunnel first — and Todd were well.

The men, who referred to their cramped pocket 925m underground as a two-star hotel — the pair being the two stars — were brought to ground level by their rescuers and a medical crew.



It is thought the men crawled through the escape tunnel themselves. They were then expected to take showers and undergo preliminary medical checks before being driven in a four-wheel-drive up the corkscrew incline to a winder cage — the lift that will carry them the final 375m to freedom.

Mr Russell, 34, and Mr Webb, 37, were then taken by ambulance to Launceston Hospital where are expected to undergo a series of tests to check their physical — and mental — wellbeing.

Teams of fellow miners spearheaded the digging and drilling, which began early last week. Six men have been working 12-hour shifts over the last week, in the painstaking excavation.

Working in dangerous and cramped conditions themselves, they had to resist the urge to rush, aware one mistake could spell disaster.

"[These miners] are the most accurate drillers in the world," AWU national secretary Bill Shorten said.

"They need to be pulled up by a crowbar to get them up at the end of their shifts. They all want to be there."

The rock fall that trapped Mr Russell and Mr Webb in their wire mesh cage, killed their colleague, 44-year-old Larry Knight.

Mr Knight, a married father of three, usually worked in the cage that saved his mates. But the day of the tremor that brought the shaft down, he switched places with one of them so he could control the machine from the cabin — a decision that cost him his life.

All three had been working on installing wire mesh on the mine walls, a process designed to protect workers from rock falls like the one that struck on Anzac Day.

Fourteen miners made it to a safety chamber after the rock fall and were able to get to the surface unscathed. But Mr Russell, Mr Webb and Mr Knight — all well known local men with families — were entombed in the rubble.

Mine management assumed the worst. "[We hold] grave concerns for their well being," they said.

Although the mine's ventilation system was still working, no one knew the condition of the men — alive or dead, injured or unharmed. Getting them out would become a race against the clock.

Step one was to bring in a remote controlled heavy earth moving loader, fitted with two cameras. Twenty-four hours after the disaster, as the town held its breath, the serious digging began.

Within hours, came the news that everyone had feared.

"At 7.22 this morning one body was found during the rescue process at the Beaconsfield mine site. We have informed the families, but we are unable to confirm the identity," mine manager Matthew Gill said.

The body had been located by a remote control camera, 925m below the surface. The uncertainty causing untold distress for anxious families.

The body was eventually identified as Mr Knight's and it was not looking good for the other two men: five days had now passed, and the cameras could find no trace.

But last Sunday night, a remarkable story of survival emerged.

First detected by a thermal imaging camera, the two miners were discovered huddled together in a steel cage under tonnes of rock almost a kilometre beneath the surface

Rescuers initially heard mumbling, then contact was made. Mr Russell and Mr Webb were alive and in good spirits.

There were a few jokes and inquiries about who won the footy and one of their work mates was given the best job —breaking the news to their families.

E se ga padroni come che erano i padroni delle minieri qui in Sud Galles nel dopo guerra, diranno, "gli straordinari son pagati per quando la gente lavora, no quando son seduti in fondo della gabbia".
Ma la notizia jera straordinario. Dopo quasi un quindicina senza magnar.
Mi go fatto tre zorni nella guerra in trincea, sotto la neve, senza magnar e bere soltanto la neve, ma jerano tre lunghi zorni. Non posso imaginare 14/15. Roba da matti. Pero, spero che son stai consigliati dai medici da non magnar troppo ora, ma di magnar solo come che magnano normalmente. Oramai il corpo si ga abituata a digiuno e magnar tanto in un colpo el xe pericoloso.
Ma grazie al cielo che son vivi. Mi go vissuto tant'anni in Sud Galles, paese dalla GB delle miniere, e c'erano sempre che cadeva il tetto dalla galleria in qualche posto e che gli uomini furono intrappolati e go visto come soffriva le loro famiglie. Il mio fradel Ramon lavorava per anni nella miniera di Bargoed che jera il piu profondo nel mondo nel dopoguerra - piu di un miglio sotto terra - e gavevimo sempre paura per egli.
