Among the many strangers that hurry through Trieste, there are a few archeologists who may take an interest in the Castelliere, or proto-historic dwelling-places of the Kunstenland and the peninsula of Histria. My friend, Dr. (LL.D.) Antonio Scampicchio, of Albona, and I have lately surveyed one of these most interesting sites, lying within a few yards of the Nabresina Station, where the Sud-Bahn, or Great Southern, branches off to Italy. Its saucers-shaped outline, with a bush-grown rock protruding from the centre, and the debris of fawn-coloured nummulitic limestone disposed at the natural angle, must for years have attracted every observing eye; and yet, curious to say, it is not noticed either in the list or in the map of the late Dr. Kandler, a learned antiquary who did much to illustrate the remains of his fatherland.
The traveller had better take a carriage at Trieste and drive (an hour and half) to Nabresina (the Roman Aurisina?) - the village, not the station - where he will find the innkeeper, Giuseppe Tanei, an adeguate guide. Ascending the slope he will note that the diameter of the saucer's base is about 120 feet, whilst the oval enceinte measures 33 from north to south and 46 from east to west (Cadrastal Map of Austria). Amongst the stones which represent the outer wall, he will pick up frangments of broken pottery, thicker, coarser, and heavier than the usual yield of such places. I have collected about half-a-dozen different types, and Col. A. Lane Fox is preparing to have them analyzed. The interior has evidently been divided into two compartments by a party-wall, intended probably to separate the cattle from their owners. Yhe characteristic black earth, the decay of animal and vegetable matter, has been removed or buried by the furious Bora winds which sweep this section of the "Carso", or limestone plateau, extendig from north-north-west to south-east of Trieste; but the cotti are to be met in the crevices of the highest rock.
The site is known to the people as the Grad, or Castello di Jurkovac, the district extending between it and the sea; it lies to the north-west of the lands called Na-Jugelcah (pronounced Yugeltsakh), meaning in the Wend or Slovene dialect, "upon the southern (Jug) slopes". I hope presently to publish a translation of Slovene proverbs and songs collected by the learned professor, W. Urbas, and to introduce this charmingly naive branch of thhe great Slav family to the notice of the English public.
Ma da sto altro paso se poderia pensar che sia uno dei castelieri de Slivia, ma dal primo paso inveze no...At an easy walk from the station, and lying below the white-steepled village San Pelai (Pelagius), lies the protohistoric ruin, the Castelliere of Jurkovac, which I described in yhe Athenaeum (Nov. 4, 1876). Seen from afar, it is a giant ring-fence of dry stone, a truncated cone of dove-coloured calcaire, roughly-piled blocks that have now assumed the natural angle of the hill-side. Around the central head of rock an industrious peasant is planting onions; and the whole is surrounded by Carso vegetation - elm scrub, mountain ash (frassino), nut bushes, and dwarf oak, slowly growing, but hard and durable. Here and there we note the wild Marasca cherry which is the basis of Maraschino. The ruin is worth visiting; it shows the usual remains of rude pottery, the "black malm" produced by animal and vegetable decay, and the double division of the area; this, I suppose, was intended to separate bipeds and their quadrupeds. Of the thousand thousand English-men who have passed through Nabresina, how many have noticed its Castelliere?
Riasumendo:
(e qua scuseme, ma paso al'italian, copincollando dal mio blog; quando gugle se deciderà a meter tra i "strumenti per le lingue" anche la traduzion italian-triestin?!?!
)Vediamo di fare un po' il punto:
* si trova a "poche yarde" dalla stazione di Aurisina; una yarda è meno di un metro (precisamente, 91 cm), quindi deve trovarsi proprio in prossimità della stazione
* alla base misura 120 piedi, ovvero circa 36 metri
* la cerchia ovale misura 33 piedi (10 metri) in direzione nord-sud e 46 piedi (14 metri) in direzione est-ovest
* si trova "ai piedi di San Pelagio"
* si trova a nordovest della zona denominata "Na-Jugelcah"; il che non ci è di aiuto, perchè oggi questo toponimo sembra esser sconosciuto. Nè è di alcun aiuto il toponimo "Grad", in quanto questo sembra esser utilizzato in Carso ovunque vi sia un castelliere (io ne ho contati almeno mezza dossina...).
Per quanto riguarda infine il toponimo "Jurkovac", esiste una ex-cava Jurcovac in prossimità dei castellieri di Slivia.
Il problema è curioso, perchè in quella zona non mi risulta nessun castelliere...
Quali sono le possibilità?
1. Si tratta di uno dei due castellieri di Slivia
Improbabile, se non impossibile: sono troppo lontani (altro che "poche yarde" dalla stazione!), e sono entrambi molto più grandi
2. Si tratta del castelliere di Samatorza
Possibile, da verificare; la posizione non è propriamente "ai piedi di San Pelagio" (il castelliere di Samatorza si trova in prossimità della Grotta Azzurra), ma indubbiamente non è lontano dalla stazione.
Non ho mai visto il castelliere di Samatorza, nè ho visto alcun rilievo. L'unica nota che ho trovato in rete (sul sito arcipelagoadriatico) è la seguente: "su questo castelliere esistono dubbi di autenticità. L'assenza di strati di reperti archeologici, nonché il fatto che questa zona venne ampiamente utilizzata dagli austriaci, lasciano perplessità se si tratti davvero di un castelliere carsico."
Interessante: se si dovesse trovare conferma che è questo il castelliere visto dal Burton, si avrebbe la prova che si tratta effettivamente di un castelliere - visto che il Burton lo visitò ben prima che fosse rimaneggiato dai militari austriaci, e vi rinvenne dei reperti.
3. Si trova da qualche parte nel triangolo Slivia-San Pelagio-Stazione
Possibile, e da verificare; la zona è ricca di doline, ma non di rilievi, ed è stata pesantemente modificata dall'esercito austriaco nella prima guerra mondiale (era nelle immediate retrovie dell'Hermada); inoltre la zona adesso è coperta da una folta vegetazione, che non la rende molto "leggibile".
L'ho in parte ispezionata, nella parte più vicina alla strada provinciale che va dalla stazione a San Pelagio, perchè vi erano (sulla carta) due rilievi che parevano promettenti; ma non hanno mantenuto le loro promesse (uno dei due però è molto panoramico, e conserva tracce di interessanti impianti militari risalenti alle due guerre mondiali: probabilmente, postazioni contraeree a protezione della stazione ferroviaria).
4. Si trova da qualche parte a destra della strada provinciale che va dalla stazione a San Pelagio
Questa ipotesi comprende, in una certa misura, la numero 2. Bisogna considerare che in questa zona ci sono diversi altri rilievi che avrebbero potuto ospitare castellieri... ed altre ce n'erano. Perchè, purtroppo, sono stati "mangiati" da delle cave. Se così fosse, del nostro "castelliere di Jurcovac" non vi sarebbe più traccia.
