Uno o do anni fa gavevo meso insieme, con un poco de pazienza, una "colonna sonora" de questo secolo. Divise per anno, iera (e li go ancora su CD) tuti quei che me sembrava i meio tochi, i più rapresentativi o i più ascoltabili. Rari quei italiani, ma solo per vari miei motivi personali.
Adeso no go tempo de cominciar, ma spero za in giornata de presentarve, con qualche picolo comento, se rivo, o perlomeno qualche picola notizia, questa "scaletta". Poi se volerè poderè cercarve i brani e costruirvela per voi. sempre che ve piasi.

Integrazioni? Sì, certo, ma senza far tropa confusion, za sarà una roba bastanza complesa.

1905
Haydn Quartet : Grandfather's Clock
El primo fonografo xe atribuido a Thomas Edison e risali al 1877. Questo dela foto (trata da Wikipedia) risali al 1899:

Inizialmente vien prodoti solo "cilindri fonografici" (prodoti dal 1888 al 1915, roba ormai de veri colezionisti). Nel 1889 vien costruido el primo disco da grammofono, del diametro de 5 pollici, prima distribuido come zogatolo, e solo nel 1894 nasi la prima vera casa discografica, la Berliner Gramophone.
Bon no ve stago ad annoiar con la storia del disco, ma queste notizie iera necessarie per capir a quando pol risalir i primi documenti registradi (voce o musica). Tralasando le registrazioni vocali, tipo discorsi, e quele quasi inascoltabili, merita almeno ricordar (e se se riva a trovarla, ascoltar) questa Grandfather's Clock interpretada dal Haydn Quartet.
El Haydn Quartet iera un quarteto molto popolar in quei anni. El iera stado formado nel 1896. El brano lo conosè credo tuti, visto che iera la sigla dela trasmision "Musica per voi" de Radio Capodistria. La canzon iera stada scrita da Henry Clay Work nel 1876.

American Quartet : It's a Long, Long Way to Tipperary
Qua dovemo saltar diretamente al 1914. Come podè imaginar no xe facile trovar breni de l'epoca, e sopratuto ascoltabili.
El 1914 xe in piena prima guera mondial e "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" xe una famosa canzon proprio del periodo de guera. I dixi che i soldai la cantava marciando e infati sembra sia diventada popolar quando, el 13 agosto 1914, i Connaught Rangers i la ga cantada marciando atraverso Boulogne. La xe stada scrita da Jack Judge e Harry Williams nel 1912. La registrazion xe discreta e rendi l'atmosfera.
L'American Quartet iera un complesso vocale che xe stado in attività tra el 1899 e el 1925.

Enrico Caruso : O sole mio
Altro salto, quasta volta de solo due anni, per trovar el grande tenore italiano, nato a Napoli nel 1873 e morto nel 1921.


Famosissimo in tutto il mondo, pur se datada, xe deliziosa questa sua interpretazion del classsico brano partenopeo. Anche su Wikipedia se pol leger:
"La più grande interpretazione di questa canzone rimane probabilmente quella di Enrico Caruso"
"O sole mio" xe stada scrita nel 1898 da Eduardo Di Capua (musica) e Giovanni Capurro (testi).

Enrico Caruso : Santa Lucia
Altra spendida canzon e altretanto splendida interpretazion de Caruso.
Santa Lucia xe una canzon napoletana tradizionale, trascrita da Teodoro Cottrau (1827–1879), tradota in italian e publicada da lui stesso nel 1849. Xe stada la prima canzon napoletana a eser tradota nela lingua italica.

Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Whispering

Purtropo, sempre a causa dela dificile reperibilità dele registrazioni, me toca saltar al 1920, e xe anche l'unico brano de questo anno.
Se trata dela famosa "Whispering", nela version dela altretanto famosa Paul Whiteman Orchestra.


Forsi el nome "Whispering" a molti de voi no dirà niente, ma se scoltè la canzon (http://www.redhotjazz.com/Songs/Whiteman/whispering.ram in questa version) non podè non riconoserla. Whispering, parole de Malvin Schonberger e musica de John Schonberger, xe un Fox Trot scrito proprio in quell'anno.
La Paul Whiteman Orchestra iera una jazz band che comprendeva nomi famosissimi, come Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Steve Brown, Mike Pingitore, Gussie Mueller, Wilbur Hall, Jack Teagarden e Bunny Berigan. E scusate se è poco!

Paul Whiteman Orchestra : Three O'Clock in the Morning
Ancora la Paul Whiteman Orchestra, questa volta ale prese con un famoso Walzer. "Three O'Clock in the Morning" xe stado scrito nel 1919 da Dorothy Terriss (parole, pseud. per Dolly Morse, 1890-1953) e da Julian Robledo (musica, 1887-1940). Anche se figura l'autore dele parole, el brano xe stado publicado all'epoca solo sonado. Comunque queste dovesi eser el testo nel caso de version cantada:

And daylight soon will be dawning,

That melody so entrancing,

Benson Orchestra of Chicago : Toot Toot Tootsie! (Goo-Bye!)
Ormai siamo nei pazzi anni '20 e tutti sembrano impazzire per questa "Toot Toot Tootsie!" (autori Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman e Dan Russo), di cui esistono diverse versioni, tra le quali ricordiamo quella famosa di Al Jolson (vedi anche i video qui sotto). La versione della Benson Orchestra of Chicago è strumentale.

Henry Clay Work, autore di Grandfather's Clock
Nato a Middletown, Conn. (USA) nel 1832 e morto nel 1884.
Se trata de un prolifico compositore dei tempi dela guera civile americana. Autodidatta, xe noto anche per el suo impegno come abolizionista, unionista e proibizionista. Suo padre, Alanson Work, gaveva fondado una organizazion che aiutava gli schiavi a scampar.

Enrico Caruso
Xe stado el più grande, o perlomeno un dei più grandi e famosi cantati lirici italiani. Famoso in tutto el mondo, come Pavarotti. Se ghe ne parla forsi troppo poco in Italia, anche se voio ricordar una famosa (e bellissima) canzon de Lucio Dalla a lui dedicada. El ga avudo la sfortuna de viver in un periodo in cui l'industria del disco la iera ancora agli inizi e quindi la qualità delle registrazioni xe quela che xe. De modeste origini (suo padre iera operaio e anche lui per un periodo ga lavorado come tale), la sua fortuna comincia con l'incontro con Amalia Gatto. Ma la sua carriera musicale xe lunga, canta prima nele cese, poi nele birrerie, nei caffè, nei bagni pubblici, prima de rivar finalmente al teatro. Otien successo in Italia, in Egitto, in Francia, in Russia, in Argentina, alla Scala con Toscanini, al San Carlo, al Covent Garden de Londra, al Metropolitan de New York, a Montecarlo, in Ungheria, in Austria, in Germania, in Irlanda, in Messico, in Canada, a Cuba. A New York vien considerado el più grande tenore de tuti i tempi. Nel 1906 xe a San Francisco durante el terremoto. Xe grande interprete anche dele canzoni napoletane come, oltre a quelle citade qua, "Torna a Surriento", "J' te vurria vasà", "Core 'ngrato", "Comme facette mammeta" e "A vucchella", scritta da Gabriele d'Annunzio. Moriva a soli 48 anni, el 2 agosto 1921, per peritonite settica, con setticemia.

Tra i autori de Whispering va citado anche Vincent Rose, nato a Palermo nel 1880 e morto a New York nel 1944, compositor e diretor d'orchestra. Gaveva studiado musica in Italia e se gaveva trasferido nel 1897, quindi a 17 anni, nei USA. Autor anche de "Avalon", Pretty baby" e "Blueberry Hill".

Paul Whiteman
Naseva a Denver nel 1890 e el xe morto nel 1967. Diretor d'orchestra, compositor, arangiator e violinista. "Whispering" xe stado el suo primo successo discografico (sul retro "Japanese Sandman"), che nel 1920 gaveva vendudo due milioni de copie in un anno! "Three O'Clock in the Morning", due o tre anni dopo (qualchedun la data 1923 inveze che 1922), ragiungeva i tre milioni e mezzo de copie!! I dixi che molto merito del successo xe dovudo all'arrangiamento del pianista Ferde Grofé. El appari nei film "The King of Jazz" (1930), Thanks a Million (1935), Strike Up the Band (1940), Lady, Let's Dance (1944), Atlantic City (1944), Rhapsody in Blue (1945), The Fabulous Dorseys (1947). El ga anche scrito almeno tre libri: "Jazz" (1926), "How to Be a Bandleader" (1941) e "Records for the Millions" (1948).

Toot Toot Tootsie, Goodbye
Xe stado un grande successo anche de Al Jolson (vero nome Asa Yoelson, nato a Srednik, in Russia, nel 1886, trasferido nei USA nel 1893 e morto a San Francisco nel 1950). El brano, come molti altri dell'epoca, xe molto ligado ala musica jazz.
Dei tre autori de questo famoso brano, Ernie Erdman iera nato a Pittsburgh nel 1879 (morto nel 1946), pianista, el sonava con la Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Gus Kahn iera nato a Coblenz nel 1886, trasferido nei USA nel 1891 e morto a Beverly Hills nel 1941. Sarà anche l'autor de "Yes Sir! That's My Baby", oltre a numerosi altri sucesi.

E adeso rivemo finalmente al... CHARLESTON!!
In realtà el ballo no xe stà un invenzion dei anni '20. De origine africana, i dixi che iera originalmente una danza Ashanti, dele isole del Capo Verde ne l'Africa Ocidentale, quindi poi balada dai schiavi dei stati del sud dei USA. Fato sta che la prima version "moderna" dovesi eser stada quela presentada durante uno stage ad Harlem nel 1913.
Xe discutibile se za "Toot Toot Tootsie!" se posi considerar un Charleston, certa xe inveze la sua parentela con l'ambiente jazz e che el suo nome vien da una citadina americana, apunto Charleston, nel South Carolina, che gaveva nele vicinanze una picola isola abitada da afro-americani i quali sembra i lo balasi dal 1903.

Arthur Gibbs & His Gang : Charleston
Primo o non primo brano Charleston che sia, xe comunque stado el primo successo con quel nome. El ne riporta con l'imaginazion a quei tempi, sembra de eser là, dove tuti, vistidi a la moda, i bala come forsenadi in feste spumeggianti. La guera iera finida da 6 anni, ala crisi del '29 mancava ancora 5 anni. Se pol paragonar un poco al periodo rock'n'roll del secondo dopo guerra. Dopo i periodi duri e tristi del periodo bellico, la gente ga voia de scadenarse e divertirse, de dimenticar quel che xe stado, le distruzioni o le persone care perse per sempre. Niente de meio che lanciarse in balli dove dar tuto se stessi, e no pensar al pasato, ma al futuro che se spera più bel e felice posibile.
I autori xe James P. Johnson (1894-1955), un pianista jazz afro-americano, e Cecil Mack (1883-1944, vero nome Richard C. McPherson), che ga scrito le parole, anche se el brano vien raramente cantado.
De Arthur Gibbs & His Gang no se trova molto. Sembra el gabi avudo solo due successi, ma a lui se devi questa prima incision del famoso brano.

Altro toco famosissimo! Xe stado scrito da Maceo Pinkard (1897-1962) con parole de Kenneth Casey (1899-1965), conosudi principalmente proprio per questo brano. Curiosità: la canzon xe (o iera) anche l'inno dei Harlem Globetrotters (la famosa squadra de palacanestro).

El brano, publicado nel 1924, uno One Step simpatico e scherzoso, xe bastanza conosudo ma non xe facile trovar dele notizie. Gli autori xe L. Wolfe Gilbert (parole, 1886-1970) e Richard Fall (musica).

La canzon no credo gabi bisogno de spiegazioni. Dovesi eser datada 1923 (fonte Popular Music de Gammond) e vedi come autor el spagnolo - nato a Granada - José Sancho Padilla (1889-1960). Padilla gaveva composto diverse canzoni per Mistinguett e el iera stado diretor musicale per molti anni a Parigi al Moulin Rouge e al Casino. Nel 1918 gaveva comoposto "La violetera". El testo originale iera de Lucien Boyer e Jacques-Charles, mentre la version inglese (1925) vedeva come autor Clifford Grey. Xe interesante notar come la canzon fosi ormai de publico dominio, ma i sui diriti vigniva recuperadi (negli USA) per una modifica legislativa che vedeva come autor (dela lege) Sonny Bono, sì, proprio lui, l'ex partner de Cher! Odioso una volta de più!
Nel link indicado se trova anche una version mp3 sonada al piano (bastanza ben) credo da l'autor dela pagina stesa, che dixi de gaverla ripreso dala version del pianista Vincent Lopez, datada 1926-27. El dixi anche che la contien diversi pattern (no savesi come tradur in italian, dei giri musicali, ma no me sembra proprio coreto come traduzion) del ragtime tradizionale. Forsi per i motivi indicadi sora, non son riuscido a trovar le parole.

Questa penso che pochi la saveva! La famosa "Baby Face" portada al successo, tra i altri, anche da Little Richard nel 1956.
La canzon ghe darà anche el titolo al film omonimo del 1933 con Barbara Stanwyck e John Wayne. La vien sonada nei tioli de apertura e spesso durante el film. El film iera stado censurado e se ga podudo veder la version completa solo nel 2004.
Gli autori del brano sono Benny Davis e Harry Akst.

Xe stado uno dei magiori sucesi de quel anno, ma no son rivado a trovar notizie su sta canzon, né tantomeno le parole. Se trata de una specie de "marceta", tanto che me sorgi el dubio che posi tratarsi de un "revival" de Horse Trot, una "runnig walk dance" in voga intorno al 1914.

Interesante che la canzon originale torna al periodo dela guera civil nei Stati Uniti col nome de Aura Lee. Mi gavevo impara` sto fato un mucion de ani fa, co gavevo trova` la musica de sta melodia e sonandola, me jero imbatu` sula stesa melodia de Love me tender.
